What is woodworm?

Contrary to its name, woodworm is actually the collective term for wood boring beetle larvae. The adult beetle lays its eggs in the cracks and crevices on the timber surface, which hatch and bore their way into the wood. The larvae will remain inside the timber for several years, continuously burrowing as they feed and consequently form a network of internal channels. It is these unseen channels that damage and weaken the timber’s structure. When the larvae have matured, they create a chrysalis before emerging as an adult beetle. The now adult beetle then vacates the timber to mate and returns to lay its eggs in cracks, crevices and even the emergence holes previously created thus, repeating the destructive cycle.

Woodworm identification in Braunton

In general, woodworm appears in two forms;

Dormant– a scatter of emergence holes seen on the surface of the timber.

Dormant woodworm is a term used to describe timber that has been subject to infestation, but is currently vacant. However, the presence of emergence holes can make the timber susceptible to future infestation if left untreated.

Active– a scatter of emergence holes with a fine yellow dust known as (frass) suspended around or beneath them.

Active woodworm is a term used to describe timber that is occupied and being damaged by beetle larvae as they continuously bore into the wood.

Woodworm damage

Woodworm is extremely destructive to wooden structures, identified primarily as a cluster of holes penetrating the surface. However the holes, also called emergence or exit holes are not a fundamental issue in themselves. The issue lies deep within the internals of the timber where beetle larvae have burrowed (bored), removing material as they channel through the wood. Left untreated and in severe cases, woodworm infested timber can literally collapse due to the structural integrity being compromised through lack of internal material. The emphasis on treating woodworm infested timber is paramount to providing protection and maintaining structural integrity.
